I t seems that this particular 1885M shield half sov has a very low mintage,i find no reference whatsoever on the internet with coins for sale,are they extremely rare

I've owned 9 and identified under 100 examples in my time. I'd estimated there are total of about 150-200 pieces surviving today so yes they're certainly rare. From 2006-2008 they were available due to the few dozen that came out of the Reserve Bank holdings but today they are practically non-existent in the marketplace though I believe British Empire Coins has one in VF20 or so though it's priced accordingly.
